President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has intervened to bring down 20, 000 PCR test kits from Germany as health authorities step up testing for COVID-19 in the country.
An official from the Health Ministry's Medical Supplies Division said the test kits are expected to be flown into the country within this week.
Health authorities estimate they will need some 1.2 million PCR test kits in order to meet the Government's goal of increasing daily PCR tests to 3000. The country currently has no shortage of PCR testing machines needed to analyse samples taken from tests and the need is currently for more test kits, the official said.
Test kits purchased from several countries including Germany, China and Malaysia, are expected to be brought to the country during the next two weeks.
