President wants CCEM abolished

At yesterday's Cabinet meeting, President Maithripala Sirisena is reported to have called for the abolition of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management (CCEM) under Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe. 

The CCEM has been making key decisions related to the country's economy since its establishment. It has only UNP Ministers and pro-UNP advisors and has been likened to a parallel Cabinet. 

Last week, the President’s Media Division in a statement said the National Economic Council (NEC) chaired by President Sirisena would present a new economic policy plan this week to address the country's key economic issues. 

During the run-up to the Local Government Elections, President Sirisena also stated he aimed to take over control of the country's economic affairs through the NEC.
