A prison sergeant who attempted to smuggle heroin into the Welikada prison was arrested today following a tip-off received by Welikada Prison's officer Thusitha Uduvarata.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the suspect had attempted to smuggle 20 grams of heroin to provide it to an inamte who was at the 'H' ward of the prison.
The suspect had attempted to enter prison with the narcotic hidden inside his belt. He had confessed that the heroin was given to him by a relative of the inmate in Homagama.
Further, it has also been revealed that the prison sergeant had smuggled in heroin in a very careful manner on previous occasions as well.
