A proposal has been made by a section of the UNP to appoint Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as a ‘National Leader’ in order to jointly lead the upcoming election campaign.
The proposal was made at a meeting of the party held on Thursday to discuss about the party leader position.
Among the proposals was that while the current leader Ranil Wickremesinghe remains the leader and Sajith Preamadasa as the Opposition Leader in Parliament, Mr. Jayasuriya should be named the ‘National Leader’ to help in the campaign.
However, factions supporting Mr Premadasa had opposed the moved.
A final decision is to be taken within the party about the leadership on January 16.
