Members of local fisheries associations in Jaffna held a protest yesterday (17) demanding that action be taken to prevent migrant fishermen from fishing in northern seas.
The protest was held opposite the Vadamaarachchi East Divisional Secretariat.
Representatives of fisheries associations stated that Jaffna fishermen are unable to engage in fishing due to the activities of migrant fishermen from places like Puttalam, Chilaw, Negombo and Kalpitiya. They further allege that the migrant fishermen are also using illegal fishing nets. Since the problem extends to the entire fishing community in the Northern province, protesters called on the Government to take urgent action to provide a solution.
