Speaker Karu Jayasuriya ruled today that Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK) MP R.Sampanthan will continue as the Leader of the Opposition.
In a lengthy explanation giving reasons for his decision, the Speaker said that ITAK which has 16 MPs is the single largest Party in the Opposition and hence one among them is entitled to the post.
The claim to the post by members of the Joint Opposition (JO) group is not valid as they all contested the last general election under the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and a group of UPFA MPs are in Government, the Speaker said.
