The government is hoping to construct a rail track between Katunayake and Veyangoda in a bid to boost tourist arrivals to the country, Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said today (Sept 2).
Addressing an event in Minuwangoda, the Minister noted that the Department of Railways and the Ministry of Transport are conducting a preliminary evaluation on the possibilities of constructing the track.
He explained that foreigners arriving at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) could directly reach tourist destinations through this rail service instead of having to travel through Colombo.
Mr. Ranatunga cited areas such as Kandy, Badulla, Jaffna, and Trincomalee as some of the tourist localities.
