Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe sent in his resignation letter to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa a short while ago, the United National Party (UNP) Media Unit said.
Accordingly, UNP leader Wickremesinghe had left Temple Trees after addressing his staffers this morning.
Wickremesinghe held the record of becoming Sri Lanka's Prime Minister for the fifth time - the most number of times by any Prime Minister in the country's history.
He held the portfolios of the Ministry of National Policies, Economic Affairs, Resettlement and Rehabilitation, Northern Province Development and Youth Affairs, under the current government.
