Remand section of Welikada prison to be relocated

Cabinet has given approval to a proposal to relocate the remand section of the Welikada Prison to a land near the Superior Courts Complex.

Minister of Megapolis and Western Development, Patali Champika Ranawaka had made the proposal to acquire the land belonging to B.C.C Lanka Company near the Superior Courts Complex for establishment of the remand prison, where the suspects that should be presented before court frequently are being detained. 

The Government eventually hopes to relocate the entire Welikada prison complex, which is comprised of four sections. 

Many of the prisons in Sri Lanka are located in centers of towns and in lands of high economic value and the Government hopes to relocate them all to less populated areas, freeing up the economically valuable lands for investment purposes.
