Request to make Vavuniya Campus 'Vanni University'
A march was held yesterday (28) in Vavuniya town calling on the President to elevate the University of Jaffna's Vavuniya Campus to a fully-fledged 'University of Vanni.'
The marchers pointed out that the Vavuniya Campus has been in existence for 25 years. They stressed that it was time for the Wanni region to get its own university and noted that upgrading the Vavuniya Campus to university status was the most sensible way for this to happen.
Staff members, trade union representatives, student unions, people's representatives of the Vanni district and civil society representatives took part in the march. The march, which began from Kurumankadu and ended in Vavuniya town after handing over a petition containing the marchers' demands to Vavuniya District Secretary M.B.R. Pushpakumara. The District Secretary told the representatives that their request was justified and pledged to forward it to the President.
