A protest was staged opposite the Aruwakkalu Sanitary Landfill in Puttalam today (Oct 1) obstructing the entry of garbage trucks into the site, police said.
Wanathavilluwa Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Samantha Munasinghe was also among the protestors who obstructed the road leading to the landfill site this morning.
Recently, residents had filed a complaint with the Police stating that their lives have been exposed to risk due to the landfill site. They had also handed over a memorandum in this regard to the Wanathavilluwa Divisional Secretary yesterday.
Meanwhile, it is reported that the Colombo Municipal Council has allocated Rs 720 million to transport garbage from Colombo to be dumped at the landfill site in Puttalam.
