State Minister for Defence and Mass Media Ruwan Wijewardena has announced that he would be resigning from his position today (Nov 17).
The resignation comes in the wake of ruling party presidential candidate Sajith Premadasa'a defeat during this week's presidential election.
Taking to his Twitter handle, Wijewardena congratulated Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Gotabhaya Rajapaksa upon his victory at the poll.
The state minister said he hopes that the country would be taken forward by "building a nation free of division that unites all communities".
Earlier, ministers Harin Fernando and Mangala Samaraweera, and non-cabinet minister Ajith Perera had resigned from their positions with immediate effect.
While I congratulate Mr Gotabaya Rajapakse for his victory in the Presidential Election, I will be resigning as State Minister of Defence and Minister of Mass Media. I hope we will be able to build a nation free of division that unites all communities to take this country forward
