SAITM saga: GMOA to hold emergency meeting

The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) will hold an emergency meeting of its Central Committee on Thursday (2) to plan its next steps in the wake of today's Appeals Court decision on the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine (SAITM). 

Issuing a media release, the GMOA said all its 112 branch unions around the country would meet tomorrow (1) to hold discussions on their next course of action. 

Representatives of those branch unions would then attend the GMOA's Central Committee meeting at 10.00am on Thursday where they would convey their proposals and decisions.

The GMOA release stated several critical steps aimed at ensuring standards of medical education and protecting patient rights would be taken at next Thursday's meeting.  

The GMOA's move comes after the Court of Appeal today directed the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC) to give provisional registration to medical students passing out from SAITM.

The verdict was announced this morning at the end of a hearing into a writ petition filed by two MBBS graduates from SAITM. The petition was filed after the SLMC refused to register a batch of students who passed out from SAITM.
