School canteens will come under close scrutiny after re-opening for the third term, the Education Ministry said today (Aug 27) urging the sale of healthy food for students.
A circular had been issued on December 31, 2015 instructing the development committees of all schools to ensure that healthy food items be sold in canteens instead of fast food, short eat items and carbonated drinks.
The Ministry noted that it has sought the assistance of Public Health Inspector (PHI)'s during a meeting held recently and that they have been instructed to submit a report to the ministry after making observations regarding school canteens.
Issuing a statement, the Ministry emphasized that children fall victim to sickness and health issues due to the lack of proper eating habits.
The statement warned that strict action would be taken against schools which fail to adhere to this regulation concerning canteens.
Schools will re-open for their third terms on September 02.
