Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has said that all schools will be reopened for the second terms on May 06 in the backdrop of a special security plan in place.
Speaking in Colombo, the Minister noted that security has been tightened around schools and the school authorities have been informed to resume activities by next Monday. However, the date on which Catholic schools will be opened will have to be decided after consulting with Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the Education Minister told a news conference.
He reiterated that security personnel along with School Development Committees will be functioning according to a plan to ensure the security of parents. Mr. Kariywasam pointed out that discussions have been held with transport unions with regard to ensuring the safety of students who travel to and from school.
Schools were expected to be re-opened for its second terms on April 22. However, it was delayed until May 06 following the terrorist attacks which created a sense of uncertainty in the country.
In a bid to cover up all missed lessons, it is yet to be decided whether the August vacation would be shortened or whether school sessions would be conducted on Saturdays.
