Seven Indian fishermen arrested for poaching

Sri Lanka Navy assisted the Sri Lanka Coast Guard to arrest seven Indian fishermen along with an Indian fishing trawler allegedly poaching in Sri Lankan waters Northwest of Thalaimannar yesterday (30). 

The arrested fishermen were handed over to the Mannar Fisheries Inspector for onward action, the Navy stated. 

Meanwhile, on Sunday (29), acting on information received, navy personnel also arrested 29 local fishermen allegedly engaged in illegal fishing activities in the seas off Kalmunai. During the arrest one multi-day fishing trawler, one day fishing trawler, two fiber glass dinghies, four wooden catamarans, 33 oxygen cylinders and 10 diving masks were also taken into the naval custody.

The arrested persons and the items were handed over to the Addalachchenai Fisheries Inspector for further investigations.
