Thirty seven shops and 10 houses were severely damaged due to heavy winds that swept through several areas of Hambantota at about 2.45 pm today (1).
The affected shops were on Tissa-Matara road and the houses were in Mayurapura and Suvi villages.
The cyclonic weather prevailing in the area was the cause for this severe damage, local residents said.
However, Hambantota District Parliamentarian, Dr Upul Galappaththi said an initial payment of rupees 10,000 would be given to the damaged households tomorrow (2) and the affected shops would be repaired as soon as possible.
