Cabinet has granted approval to close down the Sri Lanka Wildlife Trust as it currently does not undertake any environment or wildlife conservation activities.
The Trust which was established under the regulations of the Trust Ordinance was identified to be closed down under the State financial Circular No. 02/2018 according to a proposal put forward by the Tourism Development, Wildlife and Christian Affairs Minister John Amaratunga.
Accordingly, following its closure all its assets and responsibilities would be vested with the Wildlife Conservation Department.
Further, compensation and gratuity would be paid to the staff who have consented to leave and for those who do not wish to leave will be absorbed into the Wildlife Conservation Department.
The existing Randenigala training centre under the Wildlife Trust will continue as a training centre under the Wildlife Conservation Department.
