The Colombo Crimes Division yesterday arrested six persons allegedly involved in the abduction of a man reportedly using a defender vehicle belonging to UNP MP Hirunika Premachandra, the vehicle has been seized local media reported.
The police said that the suspects were arrested after a youth claimed he was abducted by them in the vehicle which belonged to the MP in the Dematagoda area
The man was admitted to the National Hospital, Colombo for a medical check-up, Police said. Police Media Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekara was quoted as saying the man assaulted by the group was not in a critical condition.
ASP Gunasekara was quoted as saying Premachandra did not to know anything about the incident involving her vehicle, had agreed to send her subordinates to the Dematagoda Police Station along with the vehicle on Monday evening.
ASP Gunasekara said the suspects are not attached to Premachandra's security division but her supporters.
According to him, the 26-year-old man employed at a drapery store in Dematagoda was abducted by an unidentified gang in a Land Rover Defender on Monday allegedly belonging to Premachandra.
Police said the six member gang who arrived in the Defender had forcibly taken away the man around 2.30 p.m. The man identified as U. Priyankara is a resident of Sewanagala and is temporarily boarded in Kolonnawa, police said.
