The Ceylon Transport Workers Union has threatened trade union action if the government does not pay the interim allowance to Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) employees as promised in this year’s budget.
The Finance Ministry, in its budget proposal this year, said that state sector employees will receive an allowance of Rs 2500 from July 1.
“However, no steps have been taken to provide this allowance to SLTB employees,” union secretary Sepala Liyanage said in a letter addressed to Transport Minister Arjuna Ranatunga.
He pointed out that transport board employees have always remained committed to their duties to assist the government when it has been faced with severe inconveniences.
“SLTB employees have failed to win their demands from any government unless they resort to a trade union action,” the letter emphasized.
Liyanage pointed out that a letter had also been written to the Director-General of the Management Services Department of the Finance Ministry on June 17 seeking to resolve this issue.
Accordingly, the transport union requested the Transport Minister to intervene and resolve this issue at the earliest.
