Speaker Karu Jayasuriya has said that a sustainable national agenda is of utmost importance in order to address the burning issues faced in the country.

Mr Jayasuriya made these remarks while addressing the 30th  commemoration ceremony of the PAFFREL (Peoples Action For Free and Fair Elections) organisation at the BMICH today (Feb 14).

He said that although it has been 70 years since achieving independence and with the many political upheavals throughout history a sustainable national agenda was yet to be established.

"Establishing a national agenda to address the burning issues of the country is matter that cannot be overlooked," the Speaker said adding that "Transforming Sri Lanka into a rich and prosperous country is no difficult task since it is laden with physical and human resources."

Speaking further, Mr. Jayasuriya lauded  PAFFREL  for rendering assisstance to conduct a fair election since the 1998 Wayamba Provincial Election which was a "dark day" in the history of elections.

"PAFFREL has stood up not only for the rights of the voters but for human rights, good governance, and democracy" he remarked adding that the organisation has been able to maintain its identity due to its unbiased policy.

Speaker Jayasuriya also lamented  that the organisation has had to undergo certain bitter experiences in the country despite gaining international recognition.

Minister Mano Ganesan, MPs Dinesh Gunawardena, Udaya Gammanpila, Dallas Alahapperuma, and Elections Commission Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya were present at the event.
