Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday (Nov 15), signed the Establishment of National Innovation Agency Bill to set-up an authority on matters concerning innovation.
The National Innovation Agency will be established as a corporation to seek private sector support for innovation, to contribute to national research, and to identify barriers to innovation.
A Governing Council chaired by the President's Secretary will head the body, the Parliament's Department of Communication said.
The Agency will be responsible for facilitating innovation by adopting entrepreneurship strategies and incorporating high technology while coordinating with the private and public sectors.
The Governing Council of the body will act upon the orders of the President - who will issue orders concerning the Act. These orders would be gazetted and presented for Parliament approval within three months.
