A special identity card will be issued for the performers of the upcoming Esala Perahera in Kandy, police said.
According to the Kandy police, no performer would be allowed to take part in the Perahera without the identity card.
The management of the Sri Dalada Maligawa temple in Kandy said the decision to issue special identity cards had been made after taking into consideration the security in the country.
An official at the temple stated that these cards would be issued only after examining the Grama Niladhari and police certification reports of the participants.
More than 7000 police officers are expected to be deployed for security during the religious event which would take place from August 5 - 15.
