Sri Lanka to ratify Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention
Cabinet has approved a proposal for Sri Lanka to ratify the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, also known as the 'Ottawa Treaty.'
According to the government, the Northern and Eastern provinces of Sri Lanka have been severely affected by landmines and explosives due to the conflict situation that prevailed in the country. The demining process is important for the resettlement of internally displaced persons and threats to the lifestyle and infrastructure development in these areas by such explosives should be prevented, it was stressed.
The joint proposal for Sri Lanka to ratify the treaty and lay the background for this process was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Mangala Samaraweera and Minister of Prison Reforms, Rehabilitation, Resettlement and Hindu Religious Affairs D.M. Swaminathan.
The convention was adopted in Ottawa, Canada in 1997 and entered into force in 1999. To date, 162 states have formally agreed to be bound by the convention.
