Sri Lanka’s Cabinet is learnt to have approved ‘certain’ conditions laid out by the European Union (EU) ahead of a crucial vote tomorrow (Thursday) on securing GSP+ concessions.
“The cabinet on Tuesday has approved some conditions required for GSP+ approval,” a top ranking official said but declined to give details.Whether these new develelopments will lead to a favourable outcome of the resolution remains to be seen.
On Thursday, the European Parliament is expected to vote on a new resolution blocking Sri Lanka’s request for a resumption of GSP+ concessions, if the country doesn’t fufill a set of conditions pertaining to human rights issues.
The resolution was presented on April 20 by the European Parliament Group (EUG) and will be put to a vote without a debate tomorrow. (Bandula)
