National carrier SriLankan Airlines wants to lay off more staff to cut costs. The airline's Chairman Ashok Pathirage said at a media briefing on Monday morning that they hoped to reduce the existing 6000 permanent staff by introducing a Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS).
The airline has already cut 1000 jobs from its contract and outsourced staff and made pay cuts as well.
Mr. Pathirage said they hoped to cut 500 more jobs through this scheme but needed to obtain approvals from relevant authorities to do so.
He noted that the airline is still operating on excess staff. (SD)
