State Minister Senasinghe threatens legal action against bribery accusers

News

Legal action will be taken against, High-Speed Railway Corporation Pvt Ltd, its two so-called project directors and several media institutions for defamation for making a false bribery allegation against State Minister of International Trade Sujeewa Senasinghe, the minister said.

He told a media conference in Colombo on Wednesday that he will sue the company and two directors as well as certain media institutions claiming damages for making a false accusation that he allegedly solicited a commission of US$25 million for obtaining Board of Investment (BOI) approval to a High-Speed Train project.

He noted that as the State Minister of International Trade, he has no involvement in the approval process of projects in the BOI.

The credentials of the directors and the company were questionable and they have failed to submit documentary proof relating to their financial status, capability and technical know-how, he said and this was the reason for the delay in approving the project by the government's Single Window Investment Approval Committee.

Mr. Senasinghe revealed that he has written to the Bribery and Corruption Investigation Commission, the CID, FCID, IGP, the President and the Prime Minister to instigate investigations into allegations made by High-Speed Railway Corporation Pvt Ltd, its directors and certain media institutions and take appropriate action.

He noted that he will file a defamation case against every one including the company its directors, and several media institutions for tarnishing his image and reputation.

The real reason that the project is not yet approved, was because the investor failed to provide BOI with important documents such as past project reports, financial credentials and proof that the company has the right technical capabilities to handle a project of that magnitude, he said.
