Statements are to be recorded from 16 individuals including Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith in a case against the Police Chief and former defence secretary, the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s court heard today (Oct 3).
A case has been filed against Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara and former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando for failing to prevent the Easter Sunday attacks despite having prior knowledge of the incident.
Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Dileepa Peiris, making submissions, said the Attorney General has instructed the CID to arrest more senior police officials who had committed the similar offence.
He noted that the suspects are being investigated for murder.
Meanwhile, Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered 80 banks and financial institutions to submit details on the bank accounts of the Police Chief and the former defence secretary.
The order was issued when DSG Peiris had said that the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) required these records to carry out investigations into the case.
The Chief Magistrate also ordered to submit the telephone records of Jayasundara and Fernando to the CID.
While ordering that further hearing of the case would be fixed for December 05, court ordered the CID to submit a progress of their investigations on the same date.
