The Supreme Court today (Oct 4) dismissed a petition seeking to invalidate the gazette announcing that the presidential election would be held on November 16.
Former Galle Mayor Methsiri de Silva had petitioned the court, arguing that the President's term is six years and that conducting the poll before his term ends, would affect the sovereignty of the people.
The petitioner had also requested to suspend the Election Commission's decision to call for nominations on October 7 as well.
Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and members of the commission have been named as respondents to the petition.
