The interim order which was issued suspending the granting of internships to medical graduates has been extended until April 02 by the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court issued the order having considered a fundamental rights petition filed by three SAITM graduates.
The petition claimed that while they were eligible to receive internships they were not being considered and preference was being granted to government medical graduates and Kotelawala Medical Faculty Graduates.
The petition was taken up before Justices Buwaneka Aluvihare, L.T.B. Dehideniya, and Preethi Padman Surasena today (Mar 27).
Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jayasinghe, Health Secretary Wasantha Perera, Sri Lanka Medical Council and Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne have been named as respondents in the petition.
The petitioners had claimed that their fundamental rights were being violated by being deprived of private medical internships depsite the Appeal Court and Supreme Court issuing verdicts declaring SAITM as a registered medical institute.
