Eight suspects including notorious elephant racketeer Niraj Roshan have been granted bail in a case filed against them over the illegal possession of five elephants by the Colombo High Court today (Aug 2).
The High Court had released each of the suspects on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 each and two surety bails each worth Rs 5 million.
During a previous court hearing, the court had announced that the suspects could not be granted bail since the Attorney General had not expressed agreement in that regard.
According to the Criminal Procedure Code, under which the suspects have been charged, the permission of the AG is required to release the suspects on bail.
After granting bail today, the judge bench fixed the case for further hearing on August 30. The Attorney General had also handed over documents required by the accused to proceed with the case.
