Members of the Indian and Maldivian Intelligence community met with their Sri Lankan counterparts earlier this month for a closed door meeting on Regional Intelligence Coordination.

The Indian and Maldivian delegation had arrived at the invitation of the Sri Lankan Government, supported by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and had been represented by both Civil and Military Intelligence specialists who met an equally diverse group of Sri Lankan intelligence and law enforcement officers.

The meeting saw discussions on different extremist groups, terrorism, countering Ideologies and best practices in Counter Terrorism based on each countries experience. The gathering also discussed the Easter Sunday Bombings, lessons learned from it and the future efforts that needed to be put in place.

The group meeting which lasted for two days is expected to meet again in six months time. Intelligence sources told Times Online that the grouping was unofficially named 'the three eyes' to reflect the multilateral effort and was considered timely necessity by the parties involved.

During last weeks short visit to the Island by newly re-elected Indian Prime minister Modi, Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinge had discussed tripartite counter terrorism efforts between India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The Indian National Intelligence Agency (NIA) in a Twitter message on Tuesday (June 12) claimed that Mohammad Azharuddin, 32 from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu was arrested by them.

According to foreign news reports, Investigators in India  accused Azharuddin of communicating with Zahran Hashim via Facebook, the alleged ringleader of the Easter Sunday bombings attacks, which was later claimed by Islamic State (IS).
