Three more female elephants were found dead at the Thunbikulam reserve in Habarana today (Sept 28), bringing the toll of dead elephants to seven with yesterday's discovery of four.
Wildlife Conservation Department officials said a dead elephant had been discovered in the area this morning.
A baby elephant around four years too had been spotted near the body of the elephant, wildlife officers noted.
A search operation by Army officers and area residents had then led to the discovery of two more dead female elephants inside the forest reserve.
Wildlife officials have observed that all the elephants were females that had either been pregnant or had delivered calves.
The Department of Wildlife Conservation is conducting an investigation into the deaths.
