The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) urged government today to pass the new constitution without any further delay before holding elections for Provincial Councils. Moving a Adjournment Motion today in Parliament, leader of TNA and Opposition Leader R. Sampanthan said that all successive governments in past agreed to grant regional autonomy for all provinces with adequate powers but none materialized.
"The PC polls should be held without any further delay. Democracy must be restored in the provinces. The only way in which this can be truly ensured is to pass the new Constitution giving the PCs meaningful power to govern themselves wherever they reside," Opposition Leader Sampanthan said.
Mr Sampanthan also noted that since there has been an alliance between the two main parties, passing a new Constitution which consist of adequate powers for PCs, new electoral system won't be a issue to muster two - third majority in Parliament in order to ensure an undivided and perpetually indivisible country.
