Transport Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva today announced tough new measures punish those who jaywalk along railway lines and motorists who ignore railway stop signs.
His would include a fine of Rs 25,000 on offenders, the Minister said.
He said this in response to a question raised by UPFA MP Douglas Devananda.
The Minister added there are 876 unprotected level crossings which would have signal lights installed within the next two years
He added that a proposal has been made to pay an allowance of Rs 22,500 to those volunteer to guard the unprotected level crossings.
