Evening train service will run as scheduled, Railways General Manger Vijaya Amaratunga said today. This was after a sudden strike by the engine drivers was called off.
Mr Amarathunga said that the trade unions took trade union action after an engine driver was attacked by commuters as he was sleeping in the drivers cabin.
He claimed that the public had suspected the driver was drunk and beaten the driver yet the driver had slept since he was not well. He explained that a driver had high sugar as well as pressure at the time and rested.
He said that the public must not get into hasty decisions and assault drivers who are working despite of ailments.
