A train carrying fuel derailed near Watawala station early yesterday, delaying a number of trains in the upcountry railway line, local media reported. The train was traveling from Nawalapitiya to Hatton carrying 11,400 litres of fuel at the time of the accident. The derailment had caused severe damage to the railway line, but none of the crew members had been injured. Railway authorities had taken speedy measures to transport passengers who were stranded due to the incident. Passengers travelling from Colombo to Badulla and from Badulla to Colombo were transported by diverting the two trains back to their starting destinations from the point of the accident.
