The Fisheries Ministry has requested Treasury to temporarily cease the import of fish varieties other than Marlins and Sailfish considering the recent seasonal fish harvest around the island, ministry said.
The fish harvest from every region of island, mainly in the Southern coast is reported be increased due to the prevailing climatic conditions. Minister of Fisheries, Mahinda Amaraweera made a visit to the Peliyagoda Fish Market complex last week.
Accordingly, due to the bumper harvest of Linna, Skipjack Tuna, Trevally, Indian mackerel, Goldstripe sardinella, Sprat and Anjilawa, the general price rate of fish has decreased. According to them, one kilo of Linna can be purchased at Rs 100 and Anjilawo at Rs 180.
Therefore, the Minister made a request from the Ministry of Finance that fish imports to Sri Lanka other than Marlins and sailfish be temporarily ceased in order to maintain the price stability of fish.
