Ten sailors and two Navy officers who were remanded for allegedly assaulting some fishermen have been ordered to be released on bail by the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court today (Sept 12).
It is believed that the Navy personnel who were on night patrol in the seas off Kuchchaveli had signalled a suspicious fishing boat to stop on August 28, and had fired gun shots after the boat had taken off.
Upon an examination carried out by the Trincomalee Magistrate at the hospital, the four fishermen who had travelled on the boat said that they had sustained injuries after being allegedly assaulted by the Navy officers.
The fishermen had been arrested and later granted bail by the Trincomalee Magistrate.
