Two arrested over gold smuggling to India

Officials of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Chennai arrested two individuals who smuggled gold from Sri Lanka, the Hindu reported. The suspects, who took the sea route, were nabbed when they were about to hand over 3.4 kg of gold worth about Rs. 1.03 crore to an agent.

In another case, the DRI officials seized Rs. 34.89 lakh from two passengers bound for Singapore via Colombo on Wednesday.The officials seized $1 lakh from three passengers who arrived from Singapore on Wednesday night.

Following a tip-off, a team intercepted Iqbal, Zahir Hussain and Ibrasama Maideen who were in possession of the currency concealed in knee pads. One of them had planned to smuggle the money to Singapore and took a flight the previous day. However, due to some problems in landing, he chose to return to Chennai and tried to clandestinely pass through the Customs.

They were arrested under the Customs Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act.
