Two people died following a mishap involving a three-wheeler and a truck along the Nawalapitya-Kandy main road earlier today (Feb 19).
The accident had occurred when both vehicles had collided onto each other while travelling in the opposite direction. The three-wheel was reported to have been travelling from Gampola to Ginigathhena while the lorry was travelling vice-versa.
According to the police, two individuals who were travelling in the three-wheel had died at the location while one person was rushed to the Kandy General hospital while in a critical state.
The deceased have been identified as S.S.J Galappathi, a 31-year old resident of Ginigathhena who was the driver of the three-wheel and 38-year old D.A.Gunaratne, a resident of Meethalawa.
Sources said that the situation of the other victim who is currently hospitalised is in a critical situation.
Nawalapitiya police who are carrying out investigations into the accident said that the mishap had occurred since the three-wheeler was travelling in the wrong direction.
The remains of the deceased will be handed over to their relatives following a post-mortem examination.
Investigations have been launched to arrest the driver of the lorry who was involved in the accident.
