Two former customs officials remanded over charges of releasing confiscated gold were granted bail by the Colombo Fort Magistrate's Court today (Oct 11).
Fort Magistrate Ranga Dissanayake ordered Former Director-General Jagath Premalal Wijeweera and retired additional customs Director-General Tharaka Senaviratne to be released on a cash bail of Rs 25,000 and two surety bails each worth Rs 5 million.
They had been arrested by the Financial Crimes Investigation Division for unlawfully releasing confiscated gold for the construction of a statue in the Sandahiru Maha Seya – an enshrinement built-in memory of war heroes.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
