Two women who were involved in demining operations in Kilinochchi have been hospitalised after a landmine exploded during a clearing operation today.
The clearing operations are being carried out under a foreign agency and had resumed activity after halting operations for the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
The victims aged 25 and 26 are currently receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Jaffna Hospital
It is reported that a landmine had exploded when both women were digging a particular portion of the land in which demining activities were taking place.
A group of youths who were also involved in the operation had taken the victims to the hospital in an ambulance .
Both women had sustained severe injuries in the head and chest, the duty officer of the ICU at the hospital said. Palai Police and the foreign agency are carrying out further investigations into the incident.
