UN Secretary - General António Guterres has expressed his deepest condolences to the family and the Sri Lankan government over the death of two Lankan peacekeepers in Mali yesterday (Jan 26).
Issuing a special statement, Mr. Guterres strongly condemned the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack against the peacekeeping convoy.
The UN Chief then called on the Malian authorities to immediately identify the perpetrators of this attack and bring them before justice as swiftly as possible.
"Attacks targeting United Nations peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law" he recalled.
Mr. Guterres also emphaised that these cowardly acts will not deter the UN peackeeping mission's determination in supporting the government and the people of Mali to achieve peace and stability.
