Six persons including a leading underworld gang member and prison official was killed when their vehicles came under attack today morning in Kalutara as the prisoners were being transported to attend court proceedings, officials said.
An unidentified gang crossed the path of the bus by blocking its ways at Ethanamadala and fired at the vehicle. The underworld gang member identified as Aruna Udayashantha alias ‘Samayan’ who was injured in the attack succumbed to his injuries.
The gang also fired at the van carrying prison officials which was following the bus while on its way to the Kaduwela courts from the Kalutara prisons. The bus was carrying remand prisoners as well as those convicted in other cases, but having more cases in courts.
A couple of prison officials also have been injured in the attack.
