The United National Party (UNP) has decided to abstain from putting forth the proposal for the national government in Parliament today (Feb 07).
The decision comes following a meeting held between UNP Leader Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and UNP parliamentarians at Temple Trees yesterday.
It is reported the UNP had made this decision since stiff opposition was shown in this regard during yesterday's party leaders meeting. Accordingly, the UNP has decided to discuss further on the proposal and then submit it to Parliament on a later date.
Severals MPs in the UNP have reportedly opined that it is important to form a strong government and not increase the number of ministers.
The proposal to form the national government was expected to be taken up for a debate at 10:30 am in Parliament today.
