UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam has declared that he was willing to step down for the sake of the unity of the party.
Mr Kariyawasam had made his position at a meeting attended by Party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Sajith Premadasa on Tuesday night.
This was after members supporting Mr Premadasa said they may contest under the telephone symbol as they were finding it difficult to contest under the elephant or swan symbols. However, Mr Kariyawasam had pointed out that since they were planning to contest under an alliance and the party with the telephone has its own constitution, there was a risk of the list getting rejected by the elections commission.
