The US Government has always assisted development projects in Sri Lanka and is willing to offer technical assistance to electricity development projects including the country's first ever LNG power plant, US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Aliana B. Teplitz stated.
The Ministry of Power and Energy said that the US Ambassador made the comments after meeting with Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera at the ministry premises yesterday (25).
Speaking on the occasion, Minister Amaraweera told the ambassador that he has initiated a programe to ensure that the country's electricity production will exceed its demand by 2023. Projects such as the LNG power plant, Uma Oya, Broadlands, Mannar wind power plant and the Jaffna solar power plant are part of this programmme. He also stated that the Government hopes to reduce the consumers' electricity bills through power plants such as the new coal power plant and the LNG plant.
The US Ambassador stated that her government was willing to offer technical assistance for these projects. She also said the US was prepared to offer new technology to reduce traffic congestion on the country's roads, if required.
