The government has decided to allocate only two days for the celebration of the Vesak Festival this year, Buddha Sasana Minister Gamini Jayawickrama Perera said yesterday (May 07).
Accordingly, the prominent celebrations of this festival will be held at the Ranpath Raja Maha Viharaya in Galle, the Minister said adding that the celebrations will be centred around important religious observances.
No exhibition stalls will be permitted to be set-up during the festival at the Ranpath Raja Maha Viharaya, Mr. Perera emphasised during a news conference yesterday.
He also called on the general public to extent their fullest cooperation to refrain from engaging in additional celebrations this year.
Meanwhile, the Chief Prelates of the four main Chapters had previously stated that it was advisable to refrain from taking part in additional festivities and instead focus on spiritual aspects of the festival this year.
