War heroes call off protest after assurances
The protest conducted by a group of disabled war veterans opposite the Fort Railway Station was called off this afternoon following an assurance given by authorities to find solutions to their problems within three months.
The protesters had been demonstrating opposite the railway station from last evening over non payment of pensions for disabled veterans who had served less than 12 years in the armed forces and police. One side of the road opposite the station was completely closed off to traffic due to the demonstration.
However, following discussions with President Maithripala Sirisena, Agriculture Minister and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Duminda Dissanayake, along with Defence Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi, visited the scene of the protest this afternoon and assured those present that authorities will resolve their grivances within three months, whereupon the protesters dispersed peacefully.
